New illustration print for the lost souls

Here’s a new print in my shop, taken from a pencil drawing in one of my sketchbooks. “I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing” is a feeling I keep returning to throughout my life. I guess it depends if you focus on the bigger or smaller picture, but every so often this reality check comes back around and I question everything.

This is the first of my illustrations to be professionally printed on 300gsm white recycled board with a textured look. It comes in A5 size as part of a signed, open edition.

Watercolour sketches and line drawings from Canada

I’m still visiting Fernie in BC, Canada, and I think the wildery aspect is getting to me! Here are some sketches from my sketch book:

Some of these line drawings will be making their way onto fabric for a dress I’m designing!

Watercolour in the mountains

I’m visiting Canada for a while and happen to be based in Fernie, BC with a window view of the beautiful Rockies! This is wasted on me (creatively speaking) as no matter how hard I try, I can’t draw or paint mountains well. So I decided to just paint imaginary mountain dwellers, because, what else can you do. Having said that, the ever-changing mountains are hugely inspiring to wake up to every day. I’ve fallen in love with this place!

New illustrated business / contact cards

My ‘business’ cards have always been created from drawings or paintings but often with digital typographic elements.  Turns out it’s much more enjoyable doing it all by hand.  I really had fun with these and threw any knowledge I’ve obtained about how business cards should look out of the window, I’m no graphic designer.  This follows a general re-awakening of my personal creativity and the decision to sod the rules.  Yee-haw.

Primarily these cards are sent out with orders from my online stores (Etsy, Folksy & Moleskine). The website address is slightly premature as the site isn’t finished yet, but there are links to my work and contact details on there in the meantime.

Making Strangers – making journals

A little photographic insight into my altered Moleskine  journal works-in-progress, taken in my north London home.

If you have any questions or would like to know more, please feel free to ask/discuss by leaving a comment below.

I now own around 40 personal journals full of drawings, ideas, and writings. I take one everywhere. Somewhere along the way altering and illustrating these journals has become a bit of an obsession.

I’m interested in folktales, nature, music, literature and poetry, and these themes feature in my illustrations often. I’ve been altering and illustrating Moleskine journals for about 4 years now, it’s been fun experimenting and evolving my ideas, and conjuring up new concepts for the notebooks.

I enjoy sharing my journal work. They have been exhibited by Moleskine in London & Tokyo, and at the Colouring Outside The Lines exhibition in Bradford.

Also one of my Goblin Market journals was showcased in the Guardian Observer newspaper recently, which was a lovely surprise!

At the moment all the journals I alter/illustrate are one-of-a-kind designs, using Moleskine kraft/tan cahier pocket notebooks with plain pages. If you have a custom request please contact me at: hello@heidiburton.co.uk or via my  Etsy shop.

All photographs by Diana Stainton – please do not use/redistribute without permission.

If you are interested, my most recent one-of-a-kind altered Moleskine journals are for sale in my Etsy shop and my Moleskine shop.

Altered Moleskine journal inspired by Christina Rossetti’s ‘Goblin Market’ poem

An ink-illustrated Moleskine cahier journal illustrating part of the fabulous poem  Goblin Market  by Christina Rossetti, written in 1859. I studied & produced artwork based on this poem for my self-initiated illustration degree project a few years ago and continue to glean inspiration from it.

This one-of-a-kind journal depicts the suggestion of Lizzie being violated by the evil, cretinous goblins.

Goblin Market journal

An excerpt from the poem:

“Lashing their tails
They trod and hustled her,
Elbowed and jostled her,
Clawed with their nails,
Barking, mewing, hissing, mocking,
Tore her gown and soiled her stocking,
Twitched her hair out by the roots,
Stamped upon her tender feet,
Held her hands and squeezed their fruits
Against her mouth to make her eat.”

Each of my altered journals is one of a kind because it is hand drawn (and cut) by me.

Drawing by hand

Photos I took a while back during  the drawing process. This one is from imagination. People generally seem to prefer these to scans, perhaps it’s the element of scale between hand and paper. Thoughts?

Procrastination

I tend to draw a lot of Facebook graffiti when I need to be doing something important (usually with a deadline involved). It’s my version of cleaning the house to avoid something.  (The only time I cleaned the house as a method of procrastination was during the writing of my dissertation a few years ago when ANYTHING was more appealing than work).

Last night I attempted to draw Radiohead’s Thom Yorke for my sister.
